Q: Introduce yourself and the property you work at.

A: My name is Sara Starr, and I am the Catering Sales Manager for the Holiday Inn/Hampton Inn Council Bluffs and Main Event Catering.

Q: What does a typical day at your job entail?

A: Every day, I get to work with people who are planning something engaging. Sometimes it is a wedding, sometimes a company training or conference, and other times, it might be a funeral or birthday party- but each banquet is significant and important, which keeps me motivated and inspired. When not gathering information for an upcoming event, I also get to go out into the community, introduce myself, and learn about other people and organizations.

Q: What made you want to work in the hospitality industry?

A: My first job was in hospitality- Each day, I get to help people. It just felt like the universe telling me this is what I would be good at. I started by working at the front desk, welcoming guests, and over time, I learned about other departments like the onsite restaurants and banquets. Then I moved into management and learned how all of our team member's efforts contributed to creating positive guest experiences.

The more I learned about hospitality, the more that I could see that no matter what the task was, the goal was to make people feel welcomed, included, and comfortable. THAT is why I like working in this industry. It is about joining in on other people's journeys.

Are you planning a graduation party? Congratulations!

Did you just land a new job? I can help you book a room while you look for a new place to live.

Coming to town for a concert? Awesome- be safe and take our shuttle!

Every day is something different.

Q: What does this town and its tourism industry mean to you?

A: Council Bluffs has been my home all my life. I grew up here and started my family in my hometown. I feel lucky to be part of this growing community with so many things to do year-round.

When it comes to the tourism industry, it holds a special place in my heart because not only does it give my family activities to do, but it also brings people to stay here- hopefully in my hotels! Job security and fun things to do with my favorite people- I'll take it!

Q: What do you wish more people knew about Council Bluffs?

A:  I wish more people knew about all the different ways we use art to have fun in this town. Want to take a painting or cooking class- we got it. Music and concert more your thing- there are plenty of places to go dancing or watch a show. If you like things that are a little slower-paced, head outdoors and take a walk to catch some of our city's statues and murals.

Q: What's your favorite attraction or activity to enjoy in Council Bluffs?

A: My favorite time of year is the summer- I love going to the farmer's market and checking out local vendors. Of course, you can buy produce, but also jerky, lip balm, wall art, and snow cones from neighbors and maybe new friends. It is a perfect quiet outing for me.
