SWI Chorale Rehearsal Process (Men's and Women's Choirs)

The Arts Center, Iowa Western Community College
Come and experience the SWI Chorale (Men's and Women's Choirs) and participate in this fall's session!

Formerly known as the SWI Men's and Women's Choruses, this group has been re-branded as both a mixed choir, as well as single-gendered ensembles. Members will have the chance to sing in both experiences.

The men of the SWI Chorale will rehearse from 6-7:30 pm every Tuesday night. The women of the SWI Chorale will rehearse from 6:50-8:20 pm every Tuesday night. The middle section of the rehearsal will focus on the mixed choir literature.

There is no audition for this group, nor is there a fee for participating. We only ask for a dedication and commitment to each session, whether it's in the fall or spring.

The fall session will begin on September 12. The session will run through the fall concert on Sunday, November 5. A second performance will take place in Glenwood the following Tuesday, November 7.

The type of fast, muscular aircraft made famous in the 1942 Doolittle Raid during WWII will be on public exhibition at the Council Bluffs Municipal Airport Monday, September 18 - Sunday, September 24.

The B-25J 'Maid in the Shade' is one of the Arizona Commemorative Air Force's combat aircraft based at its world-famous museum based in Mesa, Arizona.

Tour Hours: Monday, Friday - Sunday: 2 pm - 6 pm and Tuesday - Thursday: 9 am - 6 pm. Standard plane tour fees are $10/person and $20/family of four (in US and Canada).

Rides in the aircraft will be offered Friday - Sunday from 10 am - 1 pm for $325 (waist gunner seats) or $650 (jump seats in nose).

Northern Men Concert

3 to 4:30PM | Bayliss Park
Three of Ireland’s native musicians –Cliff McKenna, Paddy Finney and Liam McKervey now known as Northern Men—return to perform at the Council Bluffs Bayliss Park for an afternoon of song, revelry and renewing old friendships. The lads have been coming to the Omaha/Council Bluffs area since 1988 and are happy to be celebrating their 28th anniversary of roving to the heartland. The trio will appear at the park in a free performance at 3–4:30 pm.

Folks are invited to bring their lawn chairs or blankets and a picnic lunch to the park. Rain location is the YMCA (7 South 4th Street). The concert is produced by Pottawattamie Arts, Culture & Entertainment and is sponsored by Gay Searcy and the Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation Department.

OWLS Program: Iowa's Loess Hills

11AM to 12PM | Hitchcock Nature Center
Area seniors are invited to join us for a special presentation on Iowa's natural wonder, the Loess Hills. Bring your lunch and learn more about what makes this region so special.

This program will be held Tuesday, September 26th from 11:00 a.m. to noon at Hitchcock Nature Center. Our gift shop, exhibit gallery & observation deck will be open before and after this program so make sure and allow extra time to explore all we have to offer at Hitchcock Nature Center.

The OWLS - Older, Wiser Learning Seniors, is a new partnership with The Center in Council Bluffs & is designed for senior learners with an interest in environmental science and conservation topics. Programs are presented by PCCB Naturalists and are held at the Center in Council Bluffs or at the Loess Hills Lodge at Hitchcock Nature Center. We ask that participants be age 50 & over.

Attendees will either need to purchase a $2.00 per vehicle daily entrance pass or have a valid Pottawattamie County Parks annual permit. Daily passes may be purchased with cash or check at the front entrance on the day of the event. Annual permits may be purchased for $10.00 from staff at any of our parks or at the Loess Hills Lodge at Hitchcock Nature Center during regular business hours. There is no additional fee to attend this program.

This program is being presented in conjunction with the Loess Hills & Heritage Week and is part of a series of programming opportunities being presented throughout the Loess Hills September 23rd through October 1st, 2017.

Community Suicide Prevention Education Event

5:30 to 7:30PM | Thomas Jefferson High School
Designed for community members, this educational event tackles the tough subject of youth suicide by providing awareness and prevention strategies. Join us for a presentation, panel discussion, and opportunities to ask questions. Presenters include: Sonya Fittje of the Hope4Iowa Crisis Line; Debra Schwiesow of Green Hills Area Education Agency; Ciara Warden of Clear Mind Therapy; and Mindy Eggert as a parent advocate. Included in educational event will be statistical information, warning signs of suicidal ideation, elevated risk factors, what can be done, suggested resources, etc. The presentation will run approximately one hour. Experts, alongside a local crisis counselor, will be standing by to provide information, answer questions, and provide tips. A meal will be provided at 5:30 pm. Childcare will also be available.

Daily entrance passes may be purchased with exact change or check at the front gate and may be purchased the day of the event. Reiver Jazz Choir Contest

The Department of Vocal Music at IWCC will host the Reiver Jazz Choir Contest on Thursday, March 15. The event will take place during the day, as performers from schools all over southwest Iowa will participate in the contest.

Two veteran choral directors will act as adjudicators for the event - schools of all sizes will present their literature as a part of the event and then receive an on-stage critique from the judges.

Recent performances have taken place by: Lewis Central, CB Abraham Lincoln, CB Thomas Jefferson, Glenwood, Harlan, Shenandoah, Treynor, Maple Valley Anthon Oto, Audubon, Riverside, Griswold, and others!

More information to come with this year's schedule. Free admission to come and participate as audience members. The IWCC Chamber Choir will perform in exhibition at the end of the day's competition.
